Botanical Name
Ilex vomitoria
Common Name
Native Yaupon
Wetland Status
FAC
Excellent evergreen hedge plant. Disease free, moderately fast growing, tolerates drought extremely well once established. Female plants produce numerous, showy red berries in the fall. Berries form in dense clusters throughout the plant and remain attached through winter and into spring making them an important winter food source for birds. Adapted to a wide variety of soil textures, but typically prefers sandy sites. It is shade tolerant. 'Owl Bayou' is a red-fruited female selected from a wet site that has enjoyed infrequent brackish inundation (off of I-55 south of Ponchatoula, nearly to Manchac). 'South Harbour' is a small leaf female with dark green foliage selected by John Davy of Panhandle Growers. 'Oscar's Dwarf' was developed by Tom Dodd, Jr; it is a male yaupon, grows to 2' tall. It is the slow growth rate and size that distinguish this cultivar.
