Botanical Name
Magnolia virginiana var. australis
Common Name
Sweetbay Magnolia
Wetland Status
FACW
Medium to large evergreen tree with age to 80’, with large light green foliage and fragrant cup-and-saucer summer creamy-white flowers. Light breezes reveal the silvery gray color of the leaf underside. Hand-grenade fruit pods with shiny red fruits. Plant in naturalistic groupings or as a stand-alone specimen, sun or shade, wet or well-drained. Sweetbay Magnolia has an upright columnar form which is useful in narrow, contained spaces. We grow them only in single-trunk form.
