The hardiest and most adaptable of the southern pines, 50'-100' with broad, open crown and short, spreading branches forming a pyramidal crown that opens with age. Bright green, 5" needles grow in tufts. Older trunks have broad, flat, reddish-brown plates. Drought-tolerant, fairly slow-growing, average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun; some light shade tolerated.
