Large tree growing 48’- 100’ with compact, rounded crown and chestnutlike foliage. A good shade tree with attractive fall coloring - has a reliable red fall color that contrasts well against its light gray bark. Its upright oval form with ascending branches provides an interesting winter silhouette. A nesting site for birds who also like the fruit. The acorns are food for humans, cattle, deer, and small mammals. The nuts are sweet enough to eat raw without boiling. Tolerates compaction better than most oaks. Long-lived and slow-growing. One of the best oaks for fall color. Drought tolerant.
