Botanical Name
Quercus pagoda
Common Name
Cherrybark Oak
Wetland Status
FACW
Large tree, with good, straight form, 60’ – 110’ tall at maturity and over 3’in diameter. The lobes of its leaves taper to points that remind some people of the graduated roofs of pagodas. Cherrybark gets its name from flaky reddish bark, which resembles that of black cherry. The leaves have 5-11 broad shallow lobes and whitish hairs beneath. This oak is tolerant of many environmental stresses and makes a good street tree. The small acorns are an important source of food to birds and many mammals. The preference is full sun, moist conditions, and loamy soil.
