Quercus phellos
Botanical Name

Quercus phellos

Common Name
Willow Oak
Wetland Status
FACW

A medium to large, deciduous oak tree noted for its oak shape, willow-like leaves and relatively fast growth rate to 49’-70’ tall. The long, light green willow-like leaves create dense shade and a graceful effect turning bright yellow in autumn.  Average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun but tolerates light shade. Prefers moist well-drained loams, but adapts to a wide range of soil conditions including clays with somewhat poor drainage.  It is highly tolerant of constricted root space, reflected heat, and poor air quality.  Good shade, street, and rain garden tree.
