Botanical Name
Sabal minor
Common Name
Dwarf Palmetto
Wetland Status
FACW
A smaller and much shorter cousin to the familiar Sabal palmetto, features evergreen, deep blue-green fanlike fronds 1-3’ in length. A shrubby, clumping palm, it stays shrubby even after many years of growth. Hardy in most weather conditions in the Gulf South. Prefers partial sun but can tolerate light shade; prefers moist soils but can tolerate drought. Round black fruits appear on long stems in late summer and persist through winter. Use it in mixed borders or hedges. Especially well suited for massing around the base of a large live oak. Plant in shady beds to provide a backdrop of spectacular form and color for low-light flowering plants.
