Excellent ornamental deciduous tree for naturalized plantings or screens; leave lots of space to colonize. Dioecious (separate male/female trees), grows up to 60’ tall. Attractive, greenish-yellow flowers appear in clusters at the branch ends in spring. Excellent yellow, purple and red fall color. Culinary uses have included: sassafras tea (bark) and filé (stem pith). Average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade; though it prefers well-drained situations, it will tolerate soggy feet.
