Native and small statured tree has shiny foliage and numerous but small bell-shaped white flowers with a pleasant aroma, and the shiny black or blue berries that remain attached throughout winter further add to its aesthetic value. The fruits are highly utilized by song and game birds, deer, and numerous small mammals. The upright form of this plant lends for use as a small ornamental tree and exhibits an attractive peeling red bark. 12’-15’ tall, sandy or rocky, acid soils, part shade. Leaves turn dark red in the fall. Blooms Mar – June.
